In Year 2007:

In a village known as
“Mudiyannagama” in the Kurunegala district lies a small
community of 100 families with about 70 households. They like
many other villagers go through the daily hardships of life but
they also go without life’s most basic need ~ Water. The nearest
wells are at least a mile or a mile and a half away. These
people walk to these wells to collect water and bring it home.
However, in times of draught this becomes even more challenging
as the wells run dry and they are limited to only two wells for
the entire community. To add to their daily peril is the danger
posed by elephants who have claimed more than 3 lives in the
past 2 years.
We, the United Sri Lanka Society of New York (USLSNY) plan to
build a well and a tank which will store and distribute water.
The peoples of this community are already involved in helping
themselves to make this a reality. Hence, they have contributed
their labor in the excavation of the first well. We are underway
to help them and they are more than willing to help themselves.
This project has an estimated cost of US $ 15,000. Since most of
the labor will be provided we will spend most of these funds on
raw material and skilled labor. We will only release monies as
and when we receive first hand information on the progress that
is being made. We have already assigned persons to visit and
send us progress reports.
We ask of you to make a heartfelt contribution to this very
worthy cause. If you need any further information on the plans
or the land this will be situated we are more than happy to
provide you with this information. Further, your contribution
will be tax deductible.
